A political prisoner is someone who is imprisoned for their political activity or beliefs, or for expressing disapproval of their government. The political offense is not always the official reason for the prisoner's detention.

The term can be difficult to define, and in practice, political prisoners can often be indistinguishable from other types of prisoners.
